Don't tell me to smile, just stop harassing us!
"The world seems to turn a blind eye when they hurt, man, Some niggas can't express themselves to women, so they hurt them." (lyrics from Casper Nyovest's song Superman)
So they hurt them. Then we say #MenAreTrash.
A friend of mine recently had a sexual harassment/indecent assault incident a couple of weeks back. Last week during our Thursday chill evening around a bonfire she tells us her story.
"Guys I had a very scary incident last week. I was on my way down stairs from work. (she works in a 8 storeys building, she is on the 6th floor). The lift had just been repaired so it still don't have lights. So I go into the lift with this guy from offices on the same floor. While in the dark lift this guy starts kissing and fondling me. In my mind I was kicking his balls and hitting him but in reality I laughed of fear, he laughed too and continued until the lift opened. I have never felt so dirty and worthless in my life. I go out of the lift, and smile at the world."
So she told us, me and 3 other guys. The guys, my friends (I'm questioning that now) just laughed and said, "Wow the guy has guts! Big ups to him." At that moment I'm angry and hugging my friend. The guys say its normal for guys to act and take advantage of 'moments'. Note that, no mention of the physical and emotional abuse my friend faced in that 'moment'.
Dear Man,
What if someone did that to your sister or mother? What if you see a man fondling your girlfriend or wife? How would you feel? So please stop abusing us. We are humans with feelings. We need you to be our superman.
On behalf of other woman.
To my dear sisters,
"Ungakhali mama
Kuzolunga k'sasa
Yonk' imihla siyathandaza, yeah, yeah" (Lyrics from Emtee's song Ghetto Hero)
We are scared.
